Overview
Situated at an altitude of 5,500 feet and just 10 minutes from Nairobi city centre, Muthaiga's completed redesigned course was opened during 2004 with all greens now at USGU standards. From the men's blue tees, the par is 72 over 7,122 yards. The par from the men's white tees and ladies tees is 71 over 6,431 and 5,777 yards respectively. The new course has many interesting blind shots but the principal challenge is putting. Members' Wednesday and Thursday club nights are always fully booked, as are weekend competitions. The club is very popular for corporate outings and is the traditional home of the annual Kenyan Open golf championship. If there is one criticism of the new course it would be the design of the eighteen green which is in a bowl that affords spectators and sponsors limited visibility of final hole putting activity in major tournaments. Overall verdict: will be the best course in Kenya when the new vegetation matures - a must play venue for a memorable golf round.

Front Nine
An accurate tee shot to the bottom of the fairway centre-left by the lake on the par 4 number one is essential for a clear and relatively flat approach shot to the difficult sloping green. The tee shot to the short par-3 second is over water with bunkers awaiting anything long. The tee shot on the short par-4 third remains blind. Club selection is the main factor on the short par-5 fourth which is a dog leg right: long hitters can easily reach this green in two and then face a sloping green. The long par-3 fifth is followed by a long par-4 where tee shot accuracy is essential to avoid bad rough right and left of the narrow fairway opening where most golfers land their tee shots. ninth hole tee box at Muthaiga golf course in Kenya
The interesting challenges on the outward nine come on the remaining three holes. Number 7 is a gigantic par-5 (616 yards from the men's blue tees). The fairway is generous for the tee shot. An accurate second shot is essential as a water hazard awaits the pull and dense rough, the slice. The stroke-index one eighth hole is a difficult par-4 dog-leg right where an accurate tee shot is crucial. The ninth tee shot is over a water gorge (see photo right) leaving right-handers with a downhill lie approach shot to a difficult sloping green.

Back Nine
The par-5 tenth is a dog-leg right requiring an accurate tee shot for a view of the green. The long par-3 eleventh is protected by woodlands and bunkers. The par-4 twelfth requires an accurate tee shot down the left side for a clear approach to another sloping green. The tee-shot to the picturesque and generous size par-3 thirteenth green (see photo right) is over water and club selection and aim can be influenced by wind speed and direction. view of the par-3 thirteenth green and club house at Muthaiga golf course in Kenya
The stroke index 2 fourteenth is a long slight dog-led right par-4 with a blind tee shot but the fairway width is generous. A tee shot slightly left on the par-4 fifteenth will take out the water hazard on the right allowing a clear approach shot to this difficult sloping green. Number fifteen is the third of the par-3s on the inward nine: it is long and aim may be influenced by wind. The very short par-4 seventeenth is rated the easiest hole on the course and the ideal tee shot aiming point is just inside the right-side fairway bunker. The challenge on the par-5 eighteenth are avoiding the woodlands on both sides of the fairway which is reasonably generous in width for the straight hitter. The green is in a bowl with vicious sloping breaks.
